(South Africa) Created by the Zulu tribe, these extraordinary handwoven and functional baskets and plates are made from recycled telephone wire using a unique technique contrary to traditional basket weaving. With a Fair Trade agreement, around 800 full-time weavers and their families are supported with a fair living wage from their amazing creations. Since wire baskets are woven by mostly men, they are able to stay home on their tribal lands instead of moving to cities to look for work—thus the family units are preserved so that they can live more traditional lifestyles. Available at our Oakland and Burlingame locations.
