(Arizona) Each of David McDonald's pieces are decorated as a mandala. Translated from Sanskrit, "Mandala", is a geometric projection of the world, reduced to an essential pattern, used for contemplation or meditation. These "circles that tell a story" frequently incorporate archetypal images in their designs--ladders, pools of water, earthly and extraterrestrial landscapes, and the four directions-- themes found in cultural arts from around the world. McDonald pours as many as 7 glazes over one another, using hot wax brushwork to resist between the layers (like batik). When the glazes fully melt after firing and smooth out at peak temperature, there often remains a distinct pattern on the surfaces, remnants of the glazes' pyrolytic molten creation. McDonald considers his craft reminiscent of a man-made geological process, where all kinds of earth materials are mixed together with water and fire and air, and something alchemical takes place within the kiln.
