(Northern California) The dramatic, flower shapes in the glaze that Ray West specializes in are zinc silicate crystals that are "grown" in the kiln during a precisely-controlled time and temperature cycle. The crystalline glaze technique was first developed in France in the late 19th Century and later appeared in the U.S. in 1905. Minute combinations of colorant oxides are used to produce the subtle and unpredictable color effects. West signs and date each of his hand made pieces. Available at our Oakland location
